February 26, 2008 - The history of the Denver Nuggets begins well before their inclusion in the NBA in 1976. The team began with the American Basketball Association (ABA), originally playing in Kansas City, Missouri before making the trip to Colorado.

The team then made their move to Denver, struggling to make their mark in the postseason. They had acquired a number of very talented players including Byron Beck and Larry Jones, but were never able to make the leap to victory.

In 1974, a contest was held to rename the team, which was then called the Denver Rockets. The name "Rockets" was already in use by the Houston Rockets, so the history of the Colorado Mining boom gave rise to the name "Nuggets". Finally, in 1976, the Denver Nuggets joined the NBA and began their run of Division Title wins in 1977, 1978, 1985, 1988, and 2006.

While they have gotten close to winning a conference title (and won when they were with the ABA league) they haven't gotten any further than their division. The Nuggets won the Division Title in 2006, and are looking to make another comeback in the upcoming season.
